I had the good fortune to ride the G&Q twice, both times with Trains Unlimited--once in 1995 from Guayaquil to Quito and once in 1997, Guayaquil - Alausi - Guayaquil. Both trips included roof rides and also pilot rides. I was riding the pilot down the Devil's Nose on the 1997 trip when the engine derailed just above the top switchback. No big deal--all in a day's work. It's a fascinating railway and I'd love to ride it again sometime . . . behind steam, maybe? I believe that fatalities involving people wandering too close to the track were not unheard of.
