Russ, your photos are absolutely outstanding!
Just for the heck of it, as long as the V&T is the thread, I thought I'd throw in one B&W from historic V&T days.
Dad and I were standing along the beginning of the Minden Branch in Carson City, NV, in May 1949. I was 12 years old. Combine #18 at the right was also the caboose for the "Minden Mixed" freight train. The train crew decided to get rid of the caboose that also was coupled to the train so they did this "flying switch" through a 3-way stub switch in Carson City. Roadmaster Patrick Allen was at the caboose's brake wheel.
Dad made this photo, then hoisted me up on the platform steps of the moving combine and we rode it down to Minden. I had my own box camera of the day but it was no match for Dad's 35mm. We were the only passengers; there were two crew members on board, one of whom had a guitar which he was playing. The steam engine on the train was V&T #26 which was destroyed by fire a year later when its engine house in Reno burned to the ground around the engine.
For the record, the Nevada State RR Museum has the hardware of combine 18 in storage; the wooden portions were largely burned by vandals in the 1950s and the rest of the wood rotted away. The caboose has been restored to its original Nevada Copper Belt appearance, is owned by the NSRR Museum and periodically is operated by them.
This picture marked the start the third day of 3 days of riding the historic V&T by Dad and me. We covered all the trackage that existed then: Reno to Carson City to Minden and back, then the bonus of the Minden Mixed at the end.
Best regards, Hart Corbett
