I disagree

I also appreciate this thread focusing on the issue at hand.

I have to disagree about using the 483 as the display in Chama. 483 was the start of the C&TS RR; literally a phoenix rising from the ashes. I think it serves a much higher role as the symbol. I can not imagine there is any symbolism in running it among the other K-36's; it would be like the prize cow, just one in the herd. As the symbol it gets to represent all the C&TS is. Personally I could take a lot more out of this--the first photo on the roll--than sitting on, say 487 watching 483 pull out with a load of luckier riders.

The K-37's. I look at them as the peak of narrow gauge development and one does need to be preserved, preferable each at Antonito and Durango where they made their biggest impact. However, there are plenty of parts from the 8 or 9 that survive that could be used to keep one running on revenue. I firmly believe there is more potential having a unique surviving example of an engine type, particularly if it was run on all special excursions and double headers.

The argument seems to boil down to symbolism over uniqueness. I would be happy if there was money to do both. Since that is not an current option, my vote is for unique.
