It definitely appears to be a Mason "Bogie" locomotive, evidenced by the reversing shaft crossing the boiler adjacent to the bell. I believe Mason was the only builder that used this arrangement...and they did not begin using it until about 1876. Since the Grafton Centre RR (this seems to be the correct spelling BTW) was built ca. 1874 there must have been at least one locomotive previous to this one, unless their steam motor car was the only power on the line during the first years. A capsule history of the GCRR states that operation began Aug 20, 1874 with three miles of track between N. Grafton and Grafton Ctr., one locomotive, one passenger car and one flat car.
