Mike, I always enjoy your postings about the "good ole" D&S days. It was an exciting time with all of the Locos trucking in from Alamosa and the anticipation of the 481 steaming again. Here is my recollection of 1981 watchmen and engineman (for starters) and first jobs for the record.Correct me if needed!
Ray Loose hired out as a watchman (security) for the property before the sale was even final. I recall he recieved the first paycheck of the D&S.
Mike Ramsey hired out as a mechanic helper and was the first day shift engine watchman.
John Coker was the first afternoon engine watchman
until he went painting in the car shop. Ray Loose then came back to fill that slot.
Bill Colley was a car knocker in April, then became an engine watchman when we fired up.
I hired out April 25 as a coach cleaner, then became the midnight watchman when we first fired up the 473.
First enginemen (in order of appearance on the property)
Steve Limatta (Eng)
Paul Connor (Eng)
Scott Graham (Frmn)
Fred Paulek (Frmn)
Richard Connor (frmn)
Bill Huffman (Frmn/Eng)
Jeff McCandless (Eng)
Dave Elwood (Eng)
That's just a start. Tons of moments come to mind right now! I'm am thankful to say that all of my fellow engine watchmen in 1981 remain friends, as well as so many others. More later!
