Good Question? We managed with having some good employees and management (even though we didn't always get along) and a huge desire to get things done. Of course it helped that MR. "B" kept throwing money at the operation from the very begining. In 1981, as I recall the 473 was the first one out and was used on several work trains and at least one freight train before the begining of the tourist season. The DRGW had promised to deliever flume pipe and supplies to Tacoma for the Colorado Ute Electric Power Plant. One of those trips (my first trip as a fireman on this road) was very eventfull, as there was an accident at the power plant which resulted in a fatality and serious injury, but that is another story. The next engine out was the 476 and the first test doubleheader, and probably the first doubleheader to Silverton in years. I caught the 476 (fireman) as the road engine that day. The 478 was out by the end of June or mid July I belive, and we had already started work on the 481. It was out on its first run on Colorado Day (August 1). It is all a big blure now. How did we do all that Jeff, John, Ray?
