The whistles that are in use now at knott's now are the same old ones when I was there except for what they were on.There was a total of four D&RGW
and D&RG whistles when I first started.
The 464 had an idenical whistle to the 463s as far as sound. As far as I know it was 464s original whistle. The 41s on the other hand was a
bone and window rattler! It was a medium size 6"
brass single note.I believe the 64s was a 5" single note iron bell iron bowl. The 41s was it's original whistle!! The other two were hidden away
until I showed up.They use to sit on top of the foremans office. The neat one was the 5 chime with an original finnial on top.The kind you see in photos on many K-28s prior to 1950.I'll bet this whistle was a K-28 whistle.I put that whistle
on 464 in 1976.It remained until she was sold to Huckleberry in 1980.The whistle was retained by Knott's.I believe it is today on 340.The other spare found it's way on the 41 in about the spring of 77 before I left.It needed at least two fins repaired. That whistle sounded I swear like 487s whistle when I rode the C&TS the first time in 1974.George Sapp after I left repaired the whistle and it sounded so much better. That whistle is still on the 41 today. It was a D&RGW short bell 5 chime. When the "6" comes out I plan
on fixing up a spare whistle we have on hand,a D&RGW 5 chime.I want to re produce an idenical finnial as was on the "6" in the early 50s.
