You must never have heard the anemic wheezer that was on the 498. Weakest whistle in all Christendom. Quite the opposite was the banshee screamer on the 493. That's the thing with home-made-in-the-shop boiler tube affairs, you get all sorts of unusual sounds. Some, like the 497's old whistle, or the melodious chime of the 491, could be played like a theatre organ. Others were just plain putrid.
