Jeff, I found the photos you posted very interesting. There must be another AFE, since the top photo is of a ex-D&RGW 3000 series boxcar and not a 4000 series boxcar, as noted in Jerry's AFE. Additionally I can identify the location of the middle photo as being in Iwilei yard in Honolulu, at the freight depot just south of the passenger terminal. The unusual truss visible is an identifying detail of the freight depot canopy. You can check in HAWAIIAN RAILWAY ALBUM WWII PHOTOGRAPHS, written by Gale E. Treiber on page 6 for a clear view of the truss.
I strongly suspect that the top photo was also taken in Iwilei yard, but I cannot ID it from my limited resources. I also believe that the photo of the NCNG car is there as well, since the buildings in the background appear to be similar to those in other photos of the yard.
I also suspect that the D&RGW flat cars were used by the Navy as bomb cars...
Thanks for posting these photos... it's always a pleasure seeing photos of the OR&L. After all, what other narrow gauge railway was signalized?
