This is a real surprise to me.
I remember seeing the unpainted and long decaying body of what was thought to be #1008 alongside the roadbed that went up into the mining district out of Leadville back in the mid 80's.
When the body of #1009 was recovered and brought to the CRRM many years ago, it had also been stripped of all underbody hardware, all of that was done by CRRM. And done very well, I might add.
Some, if not most of the long bodied cabooses actually had the truck assembly offset from the center in one direction or other. It will be important to really look carefully to be sure they get it right for #1008. It shouldn't be hard to figure out the identity of any of the C&S cabooses, as no two of them were identical.
Many think #1006 at Silver Plume was typical of these cabooses, but none of them were really exactly typical from one to another. One thing #1006 can do, however, is display the original, undisturbed hardware and truck.
I had no idea that this body had been removed from Colorado at all.
Great news.
Thanks for the post.
