Glenn - I have not traversed the old ROW from Prairie City up to Dixie. By the time I reach Prairie City I am anxious to get on over to McEwen. Someday I plan to take time to see if I can find the PC to Dixie ROW. Someone else reading this probably have better info than I.
However, I know the ROW departs PC at the station (now a museum) on the south side of the valley, heading east. Hwy 26 departs PC on the north side of the valley, also heading east. Hwy 26 veers north a mile or so out of PC and climbs at a steep rate, probably 6%, up to Dixie pass. The ROW probably circles out eastward, eventually heading north to the summit at a more gradual climb. After leaving the first switchback, the ROW headed east. This is where US 26 cross the road with a large fill.
After the summit the rr dropped into Bates/Austin. A half mile or so down from the summit US 26 and the ROW coincide down toward Bates, splitting off near the present day junction of US 26 and ORE 7. At Bates the ROWs are clearly visible heading up toward Tipton summit, and down the Middle Fork of the John Day River.
