(I usually start the title with just the name, but I added the reason as well.) Ted Norcross was a long time Friends member who not only came out to work sessions for about 25 years, but brought out his entire family to work as well. Ted not only loved the narrow gauge and wanted to do what he could to preserve it, but he brought his skills with him. Between Ted, and sons Kyle and Chris there wasn't hardly a thing they couldn't do. Ted organized the Square Nail Gang and each summer they would come out and not only work together, but camp together as well. And BOY, did they accomplish much!
When you go by Sublett be sure to whisper a word of thanks to the Square Nail Gang for all their work over several years rebuilding all the structures in that settlement. When you get to Osier for lunch, be sure to wander around the restored depot and section house, the cattle pens, the coal loading dock, the telegraph poles, as they are ALL done by the Square Nail Gang over the years. Ted's sons were instrumental in erecting the car storage barn in Antonito to help protect the restored cars by the Friends and now the railroad from the elements.
Ted and his wife Nancy as well as their family were warm hearted people who gave of themselves whatever they were involved with and the folks responded. Other than in Chama itself, it would be hard to ride the train and not see the handy work of the Square Nail Gang formed and led by Ted. Green signals Ted, and we thank you for your love and service to the narrow gauge.
