I have driven out there. My recollection was that it was more of a terribly rough ride than a difficult drive -- you're driving on large rocks (not aggregate) most of the way, so the vehicle is constantly dropping down on you -- it actually got to be quite painful, like driving over a series of nasty speedbumps the entire way out there. OTOH, I never needed to bother to stop and scout my path.
If you have back issues or hemmoroids, forget about attempting the drive. It also takes a very long time to get to and from there and it pretty much guarantees that you'll only get that one shot of the train.
