Hi, again -
In DRY weather, just about any vehicle can get beyond Ferguson's (Hangman's) trestle at
m.p. 285.7 or so to where the road splits about 1/4 mile east of the crossing at m.p. 287.5,
and the right fork of that - though a bit rough and with a couple of deep ruts isn't too bad up
to the crossing / Curmudgeon's Culvert. As noted, the crossing is too high for my Escape,
but Steve Forney had no problem at all getting his 4WD Jeep over it last week.
I didn't try driving beyond the fork mentioned above, although it looks like the road isn't too bad for a mile or two. But looking from the train at the roads anywhere near Lava Tank, I'd say they are way too rough for anything but a very high clearance vehicle, and would be VERY slow going no matter what you are driving. My advice if you're headed to Lava Tank
: borrow a track speeder or take the train.

* Lava Loop, south of Antonito, is not to be confused with the Georgianatown Loop-de-Loop - easily accessible from I-70 west of Denver.
