Hi, Scott -
My Ford Escape Hybrid All Wheel Drive (NOT 4WD with Low Range) has - so far - taken me ALMOST
anywhere along the Narrow Gauge that I really wanted to go. The big exceptions are the grade crossing
at m.p. 287.5 (aka Curmudgeon's Culvert / The Troll Hole) - the car just doesn't have enough clearance to
get over the tracks - and the roads beyond there south to Lava Tank and west to The Whiplash. There are
just too many big rocks and deep ruts.
Getting to Big Horn, and the overlook above The Whiplash isn't too bad so long as you take it slow in the rough places and are careful to avoid sharp rocks that can put a hole in a tire. The Escape doesn't have the ground clearance of a true SUV, but it is MUCH better than an average sedan. I wouldn't recommend ANY 2-wheel drive car any further than the grade crossing near m.p. 302. The last stretches of the roads into both Sublette and Osier are pretty steep, and a 4WD does a LOT better with too much spinning of wheels.
See [
