I have made that drive a number of times toward the end of September. My wife has asthma and we wait for cooler weather. I have had some really nice weather and some real crappy weather during the last week in September. One year, it snowed the night before and the pass had about 3 inches of snow. I was driving a Blazer 4x4 and the road became very, very muddy. I had it in 4-wheel low in a couple of really sloppy places. I have not been there in a few years and I understand the road has been improved. Unless you stop at every curve, it will not take 5 hours...2 or 3 at the most. First time I went, it took probably 4 as the section houses at the summit were still there and little ore loading ramp and I took a lot of photos. Depot was still at Sargent and the roundhouse inspection pit had not been filled in. We left Salida about 7 AM and got to Gunnison around 4, but we stopped many times.
