Thats an interesting slide Rich, because it was shot someplace
between Sublette and Chama on the December 5th. Our movies of this
train on the 5th end at Antonito I think. The next movies we have are many scenes of it on the 6th from Chama westbound to about Arboles, and the tree shows up a few times on the caboose 0540.
What tips me off that this is the first day(December 5th), is that the train left Alamosa with 3 Cabooses, but only the 0540 went all the way to Durango on the 6th. 483 took the other two cabooses back to Alamosa, which makes me wonder why they took three to start with. I can see taking 2, and sending one back to Alamosa with 483, but not 2.
Have not seen any photos of 483 on December 6th so not sure if they picked-up anything en route to Alamosa or not...I doubt it.
Nice photo, thanks for posting. To answer your question I have to ask another one....How many guys would be riding in the caboose anyway on a D&RGW train. Was it a total crew of 5. Engineer, Fireman, head-end brakeman(doghouse), conductor and rear brakeman???? So there could be someone else on the caboose besides the guy who cut the tree!!
