The 85 ran in Griffith Park from April, 1955 until failing its state boiler inspection in '62. Norman Clark, in one of his infamous solicitations on R&LHS letterhead (which was ultimately taken away from him after the group was bombarded with more offers than they could handle!) had secured its donation as an operable locomotive two years earlier, and being it was a smaller piece of the collection that wasn't dead iron, he, Gerry Best and others decided to persuade city officials to let them lay track and run it. My good friend Jeff Badger has a photo in his collection showing the "golden spike" ceremony, with Best wielding a spike hammer and a young F. Norman off to the right.
