Dave,
It is good to have some idea ahead of time. The less time Michael has to spend helping people learn how to setup the camera the more time there is for the shoot.
Basically it'll go something like this. The lights will be all set up and Michael will take some readings and give you some exposure information. This should get you in the ballpark, but don't worry about be exact. You will of course want your camera setup on a tripod and set it in 'bulb' mode. Be sure to have a remote cable release also. You can set the aperture to F8 to get started and ISO to 200. When Michael counts down open your shutter. Try leaving it open for about 5 seconds. Look at your LCD screen and see how the exposure is and adjust the time you leave the shutter open to get the proper exposure. When you leave the shutter open for a number of seconds the smoke and steam will blur.
The 70-200 will be good for chasing trains, but for the night shoot you may want something wider. For the last night shoot I did with Michael I used the 24-105. every shot I took was between 24 and 65mm.
This should get you started. If you would like more details send me a PM.
