Dave and Brian,
first of all thank you Dave for asking all those questions! I Do some nightshoots at my own with either just the normal lights that are around or using 500W worklights to get some light into the Pictures...
Ironically the best shots happened without using a tripod, I just put my Cam down to something solid and press the button...
This was one of my first night shots, made by using a "cheap" handy digital cam. A friend of mine that was the night watchman that night ket me struggle around and do whatever I was pleased to photograph.
The two last night shots I took yet With my "new" Canon 400D. I was taking care of the Engine to prepare it for the night and after work I positioned the Worklights on the spots I needed them to take some basic night shots.
From what I see on the example-photos shown here there will be some additional lights installed and set up by Michael to allow us "stupid" hobby-photographers to take some great pictures of a great engine with a great boilerjacket color on a great railroad on a hopefully great trip! (uhh, ran out of superlatives now
)
As for the Lenses:
I use My 2007 Canon 400D together with a Sigma 50-200 OS lens. On the different Occasions I was using it to take pictures of trains I never thought that I'd need more than 200mm. I was on Photo-Freights oer the C&TS with it and I was OK with 50-200mm.
I woll have at least three full batteries with me, and in "normal" use when one happens to be empty I can't even remember when I charged it last time.. So I should still be OK with my ewuipment I was happy with in 2008...
