Your kids are a little too young, but this reminds me of a good story. A good friend of mine and his family were heading to Colorado for a wedding last summer. I recommended to him to get down to Durango and ride the train. I showed him some of my photos from the D&S for my book that I was working and he loved the scenery. He ended up making reservation for the parlor car. Now realizing the Parlor car is 21 and over, he asked his youngest daughter, at 19, if she had a fake ID. I guess his thought was what college girl wouldn’t have one? She was reluctant to answer, but finally admitted she does. He tells her “ok make sure you bring it”.
When boarding the train, he and his wife get on the parlor car first, followed by the oldest daughter. The conductor checks her ID and tells her to have a nice day. The youngest one climbs aboard and hands over her fake ID. The conductor checks it over then turns to look at the father and says “You must be one of those parents that like to give their kids the same name”! The conductor lets them slide but warns them that he had no problem throwing them off a slow moving train.
Less than 15 minutes outside of Durango the girls complained about the train and asked if they had to ride it back. While in Silverton the father made arrangements to take the bus back. When he informed them that they needed to get to the bus they let him know that they did indeed want to ride the train back. Evidently the scenery changed their minds but they didn’t want to tell dad.
The family enjoyed the trip so much they have purchased three of my books, one for themselves and two others for gifts.
