Probably the biggest ugliest smoke plume I have a picture of is an SP GS1, or maybe it was one of the Cotton Belt engines, on a fan trip out of LA in the early 1950's. It was before my time, I was given the picture. Obviously the fireman had filled his sand scoop and let her suck it up. It looks like an oil field fire rather than a working steam engine.
