Good point Ron. So with all this information we can reach the conclusion that Greer inventid the Double headed spike because he thought it was an improvment, it can be pulled from the side,(so you can pull them when close to another rail, or frog) and they may have been easier to manufacture. And as mentiond when pulling from the side you would plase the claw-bar on the rail base. This always being solid, when a tie could be rotten or split, making it hard to pull a spike.
The down side to pulling from the side was that you could smash your fingers. I agree with Ron Keagle that the "F" looking claw-bar was probably made by an RGS employee, after smashing there fingers to many times. This could be done by cutting the handel off and welding it back on to the side of the puller. They could have also ground down the bottom of the puller at an angle. So the puller wont move away from the rail while pulling from the side.
