I've commented before that the RGS being "perennially broke" is a rail-fan myth that comes from assuming the its pre-WWI state was the same as the later years. Even more, the Greer spikes were purchased at the same time as the 57 lb rail was, for the relaying of the line from Vance Jct to Rico, by Otto Mears. IE: *before* the Silver Panic when the RGS was in clover! Paying large dividends etc. In fact the 57 lb rail was purchased because the volume of traffic had worn out the (2nd hand) 30 lb originally laid over Lizard Head in less than a year!
