people just didn't travel as much in the depth of winter. Looking at old Moody's Transportation manuals, just about every rr in the country posted its lowest passenger stats in jan-feb-mar. If you absolutely *had* to go somewhere, you were thankful just to get there.

According to old stories from my Mom & Dad (yob 1924 & 1922) they didn't even go into town some months in Winter back in the 20's & 30's. And that was only about 6 miles for Dad & about 3 for Mom. Heck, Grandpa Tiffany just put the car up on blocks in the barn around Armistice Day and left it there until May or June! And that's in Iowa.
