Check out Rainbow Route pgs 174-178. Also the map of Silverton on the backside of the map in the back pocket.
Basically the SRR went off the tail of the D&RG wye and the Silverton Northern off the D&RG at 13th & Cement. This meant that when D&RG was switching (about 2hrs/day) the Mears lines couldn't move from one to the other. This apparently *really* bugged Mr Anderson (Mears's GM 1895-1904) and he finally got the connection between the 2 you're seeing built in 1903 as part of the activity that led to the Animas Forks branch. later on (1912, 1913?) the part west of the (then) new engine house was pulled up.
