Fred, I belive he was talking about the spacing between the two center drivers, not the center of the drivers....
Sorry for the confusion...
*EDIT* (opinion only)I have studied this theory of the c18 having 38 inch drivers, and I don't believe that it could have.... at the largest, 37.75". If you do the math, the front two drivers were spaced 3'3" apart, or 39 inches. If the drivers were 38 inches (radius 19"), and if you had a 1" flange on the first driver, 19 + 19 + 1 = 39", or exactly the space between the first two drivers. So in theory the flange of the first driver would be rubbing the surface of the second tire. I do not know exactly the flange profile (assuming at least 1"), but I know the rest of the locos had at least 1 inch clearance between drivers. If you follow this practice, the tires could have been no more than 37.5 (end opinion).
*Edit 1.5* I also have a picture of the measurement of the tires currently on 315 showing approx 36 3/8", much less than 38".
*Edit 2* The c21s stated on my folio say 38 7/8 driver, but 40 inches between drivers 1 & 2, and 3 & 4. this would leave 1/8", which I dont believe either. Unfortunately, there aren't any around to measure, so we have to go on theories.
It seems much taller when you are on the soapbox than when you are looking up at it. Hope I don't fall.
Casey
