As far as the NARA records go, I would recommend getting away from just the track maps and comparing them with the actual field notes (also available for copy/review). This will list the actual length, as measured by the ICC Valuation team. It also lists the types of switchstands, weight of rail, number of ties, kinds of ties (whether pine, oak, treated/untreated). It also lists whether the track is plated or not and what percentage has tie plates.

Example: The valuation maps for St. Elmo list no water tank but the field notes lists the water Tank, its location and the dam and pipeline that fed it.

The valuations were VERY thorough. The problem is that you have to know where to find the info, as it is in different places at the archives.
