Garrett, I have a couple of further comments on using paid employees. First, you must have enough work to keep them working full time. Most highly skilled workers want to do meaningfull work, and if they are doing "make work" the best of them will seek other employment. Secondly, hiring full time employees from your volunteers is a slippery slope. There are personalities involved, and some of those not hired will get their nose out of joint. Most of us have a latent desire to get paid for our favorite hobby, but sometimes this becomes an obcession. We once had a volunteer refuse to finish a project he had started, saying "why should I make (so-and-so) look good". The other side of that coin is that volunteers who are elevated to employee status sometimes get to thinking they own the place.
