I took one of the photos that was previously posted of the 489 in 1950 and did an experiment with it. What I did was bring it into photo editing software, raise the brightness slightly (this is a dupe shot, and contrasty) and convert it into a B&W image.
Notice the shade difference between the boiler jacket and the domes.
I did this before with one of my shots of ex-D&RGW C-19 340 at Knotts and interestingly enough, there was no shade breaks between the much greener boiler jacket and the domes. But, at least to my tired eyes, on this photo with an olive-green boiler jacket, it appears to match some of the historical B&W photos.
