Jerry:
I hope you continue to post.
Not to beat an already dead piece of meat. I don't know if you have been looking at some of Roger Hogan's recent posts? He is working with a new camera and software, I was previously of the mind that boilers indeed were green on various locomotives. I had based this on the difference in tone between the boiler and domes. My idle mind assumed that because both forms were cylinders--though on different axes--they should reflect light similarly if painted the same color. If the shade of grey is different, the color must also be different. Looking at Roger's images--posted both in color and tone, I am now convinced that the cylindrical forms on different axes indeed reflect light differently and will thus register as a different tone. Therefore, I am obliged to stake my tent next to Jerry's on this issue: unless there is a color image or a written recollection that a boiler is/ was green, I am more apt to believe the boiler was black (or Russia iron, in the case of much older locomotives).
Russo, go crazy on 489: just be sure to pick the correct green!
