What is really keeping that fill intact is its relatively remote location. Much farther south along Hwy 395 south of Red Mountain there used to be the abandoned roadbed of a branch from the Santa Fe line that went up toward the Red Mountain/Johannesburg/Randsburg area. It was still obvious in the early '80's when I first went out there. The now common ownership of 4wd vehicles has caused it to be ground down by 4 wheelers driving on it. It is no longer visible.
