Don't mean to snatch these words out of someone elses mouth, but use it or lose it. For starters I believe number nine had a cheap poorly done overhaul the first time a round due to lack of funding. If you dont use it parts are going to rust and will have to be replaced before it gets to bad that the locomotive isn't worth saving. When opperating, yes parts will have to be replaced but at least your replacing them for a purpose. For a steam locomotive to opperate it needs parts replaced. Most of the D&RGW engines, to be specific the D&S have had there engines in service since the 1920s and the only way they still opperate steam is by replacing parts and dedicated people. Its just the cycle of life for a steam locomotive. When I was in second grade my school took the Amtrack from Charlotte NC to Salsbury NC and took a field trip to the NC transportation museum. Its a trip I will never for get. Seeing all these city kids from Charlotte that had no idea what these machines were and most hadn't seen a steam locomotive in there life besides the one in freedom park in Charlotte that is slowly rusting away. All the kids saw the stuffed and mounted locomotive at the front but when they saw the opperating one they gasped, there eyes went wide, and they cared so much more. Trust me I was one of them there. Metal rust and gets worn out and needs to be replaced but thats just metal and for most kids to care these days it has to opperate.
