Yeh, I remember a number of times when we split and piled wood in the dark with a couple sets of pickup headlights for illumination. Probably one of the few weekends that Jerry Huck was not on site when he was op. mgr. I recall Jim Grigsby, Laura Hayse and myself splitting and stacking wood by headlights, for the weekends operation. This is the kinda dedication and comraderie I recall and am not sure where those other 12 people were
. Seriously though we did sometimes have some pretty well attended wood splitting stacking sessions. I presume that back when SVRR ran 3 regularly and Jerry Huck was op. mgr. he did most of the foot work to acquire truck loads of wood. Up here where I live (back when there was a lot more logging going on) some of the logging companies or their employees made a side business in fire wood. These are the kinda folks that are potential sources for wood at logging truck length. Many of the folks that are just in the firewood business haul it with a normal pickup and maybe a trailer, and it is all hand work to load. All they can do is to supply it in 4' lengths thereby having incurred considerably more time and expense to deliver a cord of wood. The least cost to purchase is probably when it can be gotten in truck length. Some of the best wood that I can recall were sawmill slabs we got from somebodies small backwoods sawmill, because there is so much pitch/resin in it that it is pretty nuclear in the firebox.
It makes you think about how lucky the folks are that can burn coal!!
