My (1928 I think) D&RGW rulebook, which I can't access at the moment, specifies the markers be mounted on the pilot beam of the engine. If you notice most D&RGW engines have mountings for both flags and lights high on the smokebox for classification and low on the pilot beam for markers.

The CB&Q 5629, at the museum, has a red light permanently mounted on the Mars light fixture.
