Regarding the 12...Frank Cottle Sr., who had the original concession in Tuolumne, had some very strong opinions about the 12 and felt that the Superheater elements severely restricted the draft in the boiler of the 12. He later pulled them & converted the engine to a soak. It was later restored back with Superheat by Al Shelton in the late 70's. Frank was smart enough to have saved the header.
Getting back to the 14, what was the first Shay sold after they shut down? It was the 14, purchased by Hal Wilmunder. He knew what he was getting. The last two on the property were 12 & 15...what does that tell you?
