Here at Railtown 1897 SHP, we use a 'three pronged' attack to our boiler water:
Sodium Sulfite- oxygen scavenger
Phosphate- aids in sediment removal, scale control
Sodium Hydroxide- PH booster
I don't have the exact quantities in front of me, but we do add these chemicals directly into the boiler (valve and siphon tube on the injector line to the boiler) or mixed into the tender cistern. There is a 'good morning cocktail' that goes directly into the boiler right after the morning blowdown. There is also a 'good night cocktail' that goes directly into the boiler at the end of the day when the boiler is topped off all the way before dropping the fire. At least twice per day a shot of chemical is tossed into the tender after each time the tender is filled.
It has taken several years to get the right chemicals, quantities and admission times figured out. The result is that you can still easily read the printing on the boiler tubes that were put in 2002.
