That would probably be a sulfate. Sodium thiosulfate is one such additive. I would not have thought of it immediately as being a problem...but under high temperatures and pressure...I could see that. At the same time, I'm pretty certain that it is commonly ignored with excursion locomotives which are filled from fire hydrants...but they are not used near as frequently and so it would be a different animal in terms of wear & tear.
