Not that it is terribly relevent to anything here, but something got me to thinking about how little we knew about what was going on back then. No internet, long distance telephone calls were expensive, and so on. Yea, if you knew what you were doing maybe you were smart enough to subscribe to Bob Richardson's newsletters....but I wasn't.
So based on nothing more than reading some of Beebe's books, some "current" info from Trains magazine that was months if not years old....three college students headed off between semesters in an old Ford for a three day drive to Durango....not really knowing what we would find. Mostly lonely two lane highways through the middle of nowhere in the middle of winter. Maybe there would be steam trains, maybe not.
Needless to say we found steam. And rooms at the Strater were only $5.
