First, the Apache Powder #6 fireless has sure gone a long way. To NJ from Green Valley in S. Arizona during her operating days. That facility had to utilize fireless, due to the dangers associated with the production of nitrogen-based explosives (e.g., TNT). It's a facinating plant, with a long history, and still in operation today making nitrogen-based fertilizers.
I did some consulting about 15 years ago for what is now called Apache Nitrogen. The 3' gauge RR was still in place through most of the plant - although not used in years. They said that removal/scrapping would be difficult and costly because the ground could be contaminated with ammonium nitrate, and flame/saw cutting or even sparks from steel tools might cause an explosion!
Second, I don't know if anyone from the Timber Heritage Association in Eureka, CA watches this board. But they have (had?) what sure looks like one of the Heisler Diesel-electrics that jeff A posted. I saw it operating in their storage yard as late as 1995. Could that have been the only one?
