I remember riding the Silverton for the first time in the summer of 1970 (I was 12 at the time). I did not know the narrow gauge existed before then. When we returned to Durango, as we were rounding the loop back to the station, I saw the extremely derelict looking 464 sitting on a track inside the loop. Unfortunately for me, I had used all the film in my camera by that time - although it would not have been a very good picture (I had a 110 camera at that time).
You young people who are interested in the NG are fortunate to have the resources that you do today. Considering that there were no PCs or Internet in 1970, the only way I had to research the NG was to use my limited vacation funds to buy books or to go to the library when I was back home. The fact that one can have an online conversation with those who have first hand experience with railroading is an experience not available in my youth.
