Maybe now is not the time to write the history. But it is the time to begin the process.
One thing to do is for the Friends or someone else to have an oral history project. And the oral history project needs to cover the various particpants over the years. And the people viewing the changes around them. In a project like you include the "supervisors". the "workers", the "preservers", the "local community", the "supporters", the "grippers", and anyone else you can find. Record the stories, record the comments good and bad, get them transcribed and stored for retention and use.
While the Friends may provide the support for the project, I would place the oral histories with a repository in the area, but not the Friends. Such a repository might be a college in Southern Colroado or Northern New Mexico. By doing this the keepers should provide due care and be netural in providing access.
