An unedited archive would be a goldmine for historians. Unfortunately, such things never come to pass, some of the more interesting (contraversial and/or seedy) stories will probably never be told publically. That's human nature. Whitewash is cheap.
And yup, no doubt the powers that be would like to have all the stories spun their way. That is also just human nature. Think of it this way ... imagine you were paranoid and thot somebody was out to kill ya.... would you loan them yer gun?
