As a follow up to my posting of 2 Narrow gauge Shays burning nearly 80 years ago, I thought I would post shots of a more recent incident.
Here are shots of the July 1972 fire at the Shops at Cass, WV that nearly took the life of our Mount Emily Shay #1.
The first shot was taken during the fire itself. You can see that the shops are engulfed in flames and the doors have been kicked open by another Shay pushing a flat car through the doors to grab on the Mount Emily Shay #1. Her pilot and other wood beams are already ablaze.
The second shot show her after the fire. You can see where the water level was during the fire form the stain on the tender.
She still has scars from the fire in the form of warping on the tender decks and sides. You can see some of this in the 3rd shot that was taken by me 2 years ago.
