Thanks guys. kwilcomb said "Monkey wrench, aka pipe wrench". They only work for pipes with hexes on them. The wrenches shown in a couple posts above may be monkey wrenches, and are an early version of what we call cresent wrenchs, adjustable to fit hexes or squares. Pipe wrenches are constructed a little differently, they have teeth on their jaws. And the way they're built differently is that the adjustable jaw swivels a bit so that when pressure is applied to the handle the adjustable jaw swivels so that the jaw teeth dig into the soft metal of the pipe, preventing the wrench from slipping around the pipe.
Is it safe to say that the wrenches pictured earlier are indeed monkey wrenches?
