A "spanner" is the civilised term for "wrench".
I'm not familiar with the word "trimmings"
In my limited experience, The hogger usually had some "monkey wrenches" and a ballpien or other heavy hammer (for fine adjustment of things) & some other tools in his seatbox. Couple of the real old timers also carried a larger tin toolbox with some lunch, coffee jug, and maybe a pint of "Valley Tan" (for "medicinal purposes" only, of course) wrapped in a rag in it. Stuffed the box away in some available space or in his seatbox.
Cotton waste for wiping stuff in the tank spaces by the water valves, coal pick by the gates, and fire hook back up on top of the tank.
The customary oil cans & tallow pot with valve oil in the shelf on the boilerhead.
We always carried our own coal scoop with us, never could depend on the one on the engine being OK to use..often they were picked over and had cracked handles etc, We put the one found on the engine (if there was one) up on top of the boilerhead at the front of the cab in front of the "fountain" as a "spare"...just in case...Lose your one and only
scoop into the fire due to carelessness and the heavy draft, and you'd be out of business in short order on a heavy grade.
Water bag for drinking water, lunch pail & jacket if it got cold or rainy in the mountains.
