Generally speaking it woudl be a good idea to have the following somewhere on your engine:
10 , 12 & 15 " crescent wrench
ball peen hammer
injector packing wrenches ( for monitor injectors)
screw driver
pipe wrench
compressor packing spanner
Wool / cotton waste
hot box lube sticks ( back when you could get them)
for logging application , see the above suggested wish list with teh following additions:
Chains
block and tackle
wooden wedges
prybars
cheater pipes
turn buckles
coffee can ( coffee cans filled with journal oil and woll waste with a hole punched in teh bottom make great on teh spot static lubricators for cranky journal boxes )
bailing wire ( to attatch said on the spot static lubricators)
re-rail frogs
bottle jacks
spikes
fire hoses
thats the basic list of things to carry, I'm sure there were may more things depending on the needs of any given class of locomotive and where it was running at the time.
