i remember looking at a number of detail shots of the 268 on carlos's site a while back and they seemed to tell the story of a thougholy worn out and beat up engine. it was the last engine that could operate on the baldwin and pitkin branches as well as the remmnant of the line to montros as sutch it can be assumed that she sufferd numerous midnite "fixes" that got the train moved tommarow but did longterm damage.
on the other hand like most rio grande engines the boiler is probably ok, it seems that colorado has good boiler water as i belive that all the rio grande engines not currently operating need only form4 and minor boiler repair work to pass inspection
