When visiting the D&SNG, I've used the DIY carwash on the north side of Durango. For trips to the San Luis & Rio Grande, there is a DIY carwash right off of US-160 in (I think) Fort Garland. I presume that one would also be convenient for anyone traveling from the C&TS back to Denver. I haven't used any carwashes on the Chama end, but I think I've seen one in town.
Last summer, I rode over La Veta pass one day and chased the next day. During my ride, we popped out of the second (I think) tunnel, where we passed one of my fellow camera-toting idiot railfans. Somehow, he'd gotten his vehicle right up to trackside. As we passed him, I thought -- Hmmm, I didn't know that one of the rental car companies had added Ford Escapes to its fleet!
The next day, I chased the train and met my fellow idiot railfan, who was out chasing for a second day. That is when I learned that the Ford Escape is really an acronym -- ESCAPE: "Earl Sure Can APpear Everywhere!"
