I too have had the same dream...however, having driven the route between Durango and Chama several times, I am not sure that it could be made into a reality. There are many structures that are now built directly on the old roadbed. New alignments would have to be determined and while that would help take all the curves out that used to make for along trip...do you think anyone would do it?
As for the Dulce thing...Just west of Chama if I recall is a trailer house sitting directly in the way of progress. Although the rest of the roadbed is pretty well all there. I could see this happening as the Apaches promote casino trains and make packages to come up, ride the train, stay in their hotel and gamble your money with them.
Personally, I would like to see a small yard built west of the highway so that some of the cars could be moved to open up the main yard a little. There could also be a loading area for cars and locos if they have to be moved out. Perhaps even a shed could be built for friends activities....
It all boils down to who will pay for the upkeep and maintainance. Of course building with concrete ties and other modern methods could help a new line last a lot longer with little maintainance.....
Of course, as I drive the back roads to Gato I can't help but see in my minds eye a slow freight or passenger train moving along...espeically in the fall...
Now, If the San Luis valley branch of UP is spun off....what would be the chance of maybe relaying a third rail to Alamosa.....
More food for thought.
